Graphene-Based Nanocomposites for Structural Applications

Lars Eriksson, Maria Lindholm

In: Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology

This paper investigates the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites reinforced with graphene and graphene oxide nanoplatelets. We examine dispersion methods, interface chemistry, and manufacturing process effects on tensile strength, fracture toughness, and fatigue life. Molecular dynamics simulations complement experimental characterization using SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy.

Additive Manufacturing of High-Entropy Alloys: Microstructure and Properties

Lars Eriksson

In: Advanced Materials Science and Nanotechnology

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) printed via selective laser melting exhibit unique microstructural features that differ significantly from cast counterparts. This study characterizes phase composition, grain morphology, residual stress distribution, and mechanical performance of CrMnFeCoNi and AlCoCrFeNi2.1 HEAs produced under varied processing parameters. Exceptional strength-ductility combinations are achieved through post-processing heat treatments.

Offshore Wind Farm Optimization: Layout Design and Wake Effect Modeling

Kwame Asante, Abena Mensah

In: Sustainable Energy Systems and Technologies

This chapter addresses the optimization of offshore wind farm layouts to maximize annual energy production while minimizing wake losses. We formulate the layout problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear program and solve it using a hybrid genetic algorithm combined with computational fluid dynamics wake modeling. Results for North Sea case studies demonstrate 12-18% improvement over baseline designs.

Hydrogen Storage Technologies: Current Status and Future Prospects

Kwame Asante

In: Sustainable Energy Systems and Technologies

Hydrogen is increasingly viewed as a key energy carrier for decarbonizing heavy industry and long-haul transportation. This chapter reviews solid-state, liquid, and compressed gas hydrogen storage technologies, comparing gravimetric density, volumetric density, safety characteristics, and economic costs. Emerging metal-organic framework materials are highlighted as promising directions.

Smart Grid Energy Management with Reinforcement Learning

Lars Eriksson, Anna Berg

In: Sustainable Energy Systems and Technologies

We develop a multi-agent reinforcement learning framework for real-time energy management in smart grids with high penetration of renewable energy sources. The framework coordinates distributed energy resources, battery storage, and demand response programs to minimize operational costs while maintaining grid stability. Simulation results on a IEEE 33-bus test system validate the approach.
